Frequently Asked Questions

Use a soft tape measure to measure around your head where you like your hat to sit. Divide that measurement by 3.14 (π), then round up to the nearest 1/8. This is your Stormy Kromer hat size. If you don't have a tape measure, you can also use a piece of string and measure it against a ruler. Please remember that these hats generally do not stretch over time. If your measurement falls between sizes, or if you prefer a looser fit, we recommend sizing up.

The Original Stormy Kromer Cap is designed for cold-weather comfort, but how warm it feels depends on the person and the conditions. Wool provides natural warmth while remaining breathable, making it a great choice for cool to cold weather. If you regularly spend extended time outdoors in extreme cold, consider one of our insulated styles or hats with longer earbands for additional warmth.
-
No. The Original Stormy Kromer Cap is lined with soft cotton flannel, and the sweatband is made from a comfortable polycotton blend. The wool outer shell provides warmth and durability, while the materials against your skin are designed for everyday comfort.
-
Simply slide your thumb between the earband and the cap, then pull the earband down over your ears. There's no need to untie or unfold anything. When you're ready, just pull it back up into place for the classic Stormy Kromer look.
-
For most people, the Original Stormy Kromer Cap's earband covers about one-half to two-thirds of the ear. Because everyone's head shape and ear placement are different, coverage will vary. If you're looking for more coverage or added warmth in extreme cold, Stormy Kromer also offers styles with longer earbands and additional insulation.
-
Dry cleaning is the best way to care for your Original Stormy Kromer Cap. For small spills or stains, spot cleaning is often enough. If your cap gets wet from rain or snow, let it air dry naturally away from direct heat or sunlight. Never put your wool cap in the dryer, as the heat can cause it to shrink.

I received my replacement cap in the correct size to one I lost back in the 1970's and I am a happy Kromer wearer again!

I have 3 other Stormys and bought the blaze orange for hunting this fall. It’s well made, warm and comfortable. This hat works when sitting in the stand or walking in the woods.

Bill is significantly narrow than the old ones. Why change a good thing?

This is not the first Stormy Kromer hat I have purchased, but this one was made very poorly it is painful to wear. The stitching on the forehead digs in. I measured the hat ear to ear and it is correct 7 5/8ths. But back to front it is only 7 inches. Painful. I emailed the company and have not heard back. Very disappointing. ~~ Hi Craig, I am sorry to hear your disappointment with your cap. It seems you may need a size up if it is uncomfortable. We did receive your email and responded on 11/6. Please let us know if we can of any further assistance on helping you get a good fitting cap. We are happy to answer any questions you may have. SK~~

7 1/2 to loose ,7 3/8 little tight but I would rather have it little tight than loose. I'll stretch it out.( Big, fat head ???)

Very well made! I expect to be wearing this hat for years to come. Now I match my husband and both my Standard Poodles. By the way, the Stormy Kromer dog hats are also very well made, and sit correctly on their heads. (NOTE: I purchased the correct size, but at first was concerned as the flaps, when folded down, did not cover my ears. I then loosened the tie just a bit and it made all the difference in fit and covering my ears.)

This past Tuesday we drove to the Stormy Kromer factory/store. My wife saw a red plaid insulated shirt that she liked. At $150 I thought it was pricey but she liked it so we bought it. Two days later the snaps started falling off. It was only then that I checked the label and discovered the shirt we bought at the US factory in Michigan was made in Honduras! Never dawned on me to check. Luckily we are vacationing about 30 miles away in northern Wisconsin so we made the drive back and returned it. I expected more from Stormy Kromer. ~~ Hi Wayne, We are sorry you had this experience. Please feel free to reach out to our CS team at [email protected] so we can discuss this further and make it right. Again, we do apologize. SK~~

Got it in Adirondack plaid and it’s a great product. It’s the perfect cold weather hat for me as I could never wear a stocking cap or beanie, those are just to warm for me. The ear flap feature is just right for keeping the wind off my ears and the craftsmanship is top notch, just what I’ve come to expect from Stormy Kromer. This is my 5th Kromer Cap and I wear them all winter long and have done for many years.
