Frequently Asked Questions

The Mackinaw Cap uses premium 26-ounce, 100% wool from American Woolen Company in Connecticut. It's slightly heavier than the wool blend used in the Original Stormy Kromer Cap and matches the wool used in our Button Vest, Mackinaw Coat, and Double Mackinaw Coat.
-
Use a soft tape measure to measure around your head where you like your hat to sit. Divide that measurement by 3.14 (π), then round up to the nearest 1/8. This is your Stormy Kromer hat size. If you don't have a tape measure, you can also use a piece of string and measure it against a ruler. Please remember that these hats generally do not stretch over time. If your measurement falls between sizes, or if you prefer a looser fit, we recommend sizing up.
-
The Mackinaw Cap is designed for cold-weather comfort, but how warm it feels depends on the person and the conditions. Wool provides natural warmth while remaining breathable, making it a great choice for cool to cold weather. If you regularly spend extended time outdoors in extreme cold, consider one of our insulated styles or hats with longer earbands for additional warmth.
-
Simply slide your thumb between the earband and the cap, then pull the earband down over your ears. There's no need to untie or unfold anything. When you're ready, just pull it back up into place for the classic Stormy Kromer look.
-
For most people, the Mackinaw Cap's earband covers about one-half to two-thirds of the ear. Because everyone's head shape and ear placement are different, coverage will vary. If you're looking for more coverage or added warmth in extreme cold, Stormy Kromer also offers styles with longer earbands and additional insulation.
-
Dry cleaning is the best way to care for your Mackinaw Cap. For small spills or stains, spot cleaning is often enough. If your cap gets wet from rain or snow, let it air dry naturally away from direct heat or sunlight. Never put your wool cap in the dryer, as the heat can cause it to shrink.

I purchased this cap because I love the bright red 100% wool plaid , it's both warm and classy. I've got a few different Stormy's but this one is by far my favorite and I have worn it almost daily since the end of October..I can't count how many times I have been complimented on my hat but I can assure ya it's been a lot and I can't brag enough about the quality, value and warmth it provides. I take pride in supporting any Michigan business and "Made In The USA" product. Due to the fact that I can't have too many Kromers in my life , I'm certain I'll be ordering more in near future.

The hat band was not sown on properly. The name on the back of the band is not centered. In addition each end of the band should meet in the front and have the same distance from the center seam of the hat. My hat is off a 1/4 to 3/8 inches off center. Some users would not be bother by it being off center. But I bought this hat expecting exceptionalism . I have 4 other Mackinaws all of which are centered perfectly . I will not be wearing this hat. I will give it to Good Will. ~~ Sorry to hear the cap isn't up to our standard. We will make sure our inspection department is made aware of this issue. Please give our customer service a call and they will assist you in returning the cap. 888-455-2253. SK ~~

Been wanting a Kromer for over a year. Finally bit the bullet and bought one for myself, and convinced my dad and a friend to purchase one. The three of us love em. As Hank Hill would say, I tell you hwhat. These hats are great. Excellent American made product that I’m proud to put on my dome. Thank you very much, I am most certainly a life long Kromer Domer!!

I've wanted this one for a few years now. Michigan made, Michigan worn, & Michigan proud! You folks should be very proud of what you are doing. Outstanding workmanship & materials. Sooo much warmer than my Carhart version.

This cap is wonderful. Wool is an odd thing in that it's never toasty warm like down or fleece, but it always feels the same. I can wear this hat in the house without getting hot, or go snowshoeing at 11 degrees in the wind without my head getting cold. This is my first Stormy Kromer product but based on the quality of the wool and the construction quality I expect this hat will last my lifetime.
