Frequently Asked Questions
-
The Waxed Rancher Cap is water-resistant, not waterproof. Its paraffin-treated waxed cotton shell sheds rain and snow in most conditions, but because the seams aren't sealed, it's not designed for prolonged exposure to heavy rain.
-
The Waxed Rancher Cap offers warmth comparable to the Rancher Cap. Instead of Thinsulate™, it uses Lamilite® insulation in the crown along with the same extended, fleece-lined earbands.
-
Choose the Waxed Rancher Cap if you expect wet conditions. Its paraffin-treated waxed cotton shell sheds rain and wet snow while developing a distinctive weathered look over time. If you prefer the classic look and feel of wool, choose the Rancher Cap.
-
Yes. The Waxed Rancher Cap's extended earbands fully cover your ears and provide added protection at the back of the neck, making it a great choice for cold, wet, and windy conditions.

Use a soft tape measure to measure around your head where you like your hat to sit. Divide that measurement by 3.14 (π), then round up to the nearest 1/8. This is your Stormy Kromer hat size. If you don't have a tape measure, you can also use a piece of string and measure it against a ruler. Please remember that these hats generally do not stretch over time. If your measurement falls between sizes, or if you prefer a looser fit, we recommend sizing up.
-
Spot clean with cold water whenever possible. If needed, use a gentle castile soap. Avoid hot water, laundry detergent, and dish soap, as they can damage the waxed finish. Over time, you may need to rewax your cap to restore its water resistance. We offer wax tins for that purpose.

Love it! My first Stormy and I couldn't be happier. If I could have slept in it last night, I would have! It is definitely snug, but I anticipate it to fit better with wear. So happy to finally be one of the cool kids (only took me 52 years!).

This is a very well built American made hat. Good fit and will take a very strong wind to dislodge this hat. Nice and warm too. I cannot get over the quality of them.

the cap is warm, runs a little snug, however I believe the wax creates a peculiar smell

To me, this is the pinnacle of SK. Snowshoeing, plowing, shoveling and chopping firewood have all become bearable. I cannot tell you how many winter days I've wished for a baseball hat to protect my eyes from the sun and yet a way to keep my ears warm. I wear it to walk my dog and go ice fishing. I have never owned a more versatile hat. Now, I wear it snowshoeing and hiking to 14,000 ft. mountains in Colorado. I'm proud to take Stormy Kromer from my hometown in WI to the Rocky Mountains. Thank you Stormy Kromer!

While I haven't had an opportunity yet to wear this cap out in the elements (who'd a thought that it wouldn't be cold yet by now in Illinois?), I can tell it's going to be the warmest SK that I have. It fits maybe a little tight, but that'll loosen up with the waxed cotton with regular wearing. Quality is first rate, as expected with SK. When the ear flaps are folded down, your going to be covered well down your neck. I'm actually looking forward to the first cold blast from Mother Nature. Keep up the good work SK!
