Frequently Asked Questions

  • Both are classic Stormy Kromer wool vests, but they offer different looks and features. The Button Vest has a traditional design with a button front, V-neck, and slightly heavier 26-ounce, 100% wool that matches our Mackinaw Coat. The Ironwood Vest has a more modern look with a full-length zipper, stand-up collar, and slightly lighter wool for everyday versatility.

  • The Button Vest fits true to size and is designed to layer comfortably over a flannel shirt or sweater. We recommend ordering based on the chest measurement in our sizing chart. If you are 6' or taller, you might consider our tall sizes.

  • A wool vest keeps your core warm while giving your arms full freedom of movement. It's a great choice for working outdoors, running errands, or layering when a full coat feels like too much. Many people find a vest to be one of the most versatile pieces in their cold-weather wardrobe.

  • The Button Vest is designed to keep your core warm without restricting movement. Its heavy 26-ounce wool makes it a great outer layer in cool weather or an excellent mid-layer under a coat in colder conditions. The V-neck design also layers comfortably over hoodies, flannels, and sweaters without adding bulk around your neck.

  • Yes, especially in snow. Wool can absorb up to 35% of its weight in moisture while still providing warmth, making the Button Vest an excellent choice for cold, damp conditions. It isn't waterproof, however, so while it will handle light precipitation well, it's not designed for prolonged exposure to heavy rain.

  • Dry cleaning is the best way to care for your Button Vest. Spot cleaning can work for small stains as needed. If the coat becomes wet, allow it to air dry away from direct heat or sunlight. Never machine dry your wool coat.

This vest did not disappoint. It is comfortable and warm. I'm 6 feet tall 185 pounds and sized up like so many reviewers suggested 2x instead of my usual xl.

Absolutely AWESOME VEST. Best ever! At 6’0” 310 I bought an 3XL long wool button vest and I love it! I can almost wear it year round. I loved it so much I ordered the olive wool vest too. I mistakenly ordered the wrong size at 3XL (not long). So glad I did because it actually fits better than the 3XL long grey one. Going on 4 years having these vest and I can say that they will lest long after I am gone. My grand children will have them

Just got a Button Vest. Terrific customer service from S-K, as usual. If I may say so, I cut a dashing figure in it. Very high quality product, and pretty warm as well. Personally, I could do without carrying the SK banner on the front....it still has the script name, 1903 on the back at the top in contrasting thread. Fits true to size....I am 6'3", 215 lbs, and got the XLT in the Olive color. Is roomy enough to wear over a sweater if desired, where the LT would be too tight for that, less 'gut room'. One complaint: SK uses the US Postal Service for free shipping.....IMO, they are terrible at what they're supposed to do. Recommend paying for an alternate shipping method. Overall, highly recommended vest.

To me the sizing runs a little different. Normally I wear a large size, but my first vest was a little tight around the midsection. So this time I ordered the XL and it fit perfectly with room to move.

This is my first Stormy Kromer vest, I also have a Filson, I like both but the SK vest I like a little better because of the longer length in the back, it gives better coverage and protects against rogue drafts. It’s also cut wider in the shoulders, giving more coverage on your shoulder. I’m 6’ 215 Lbs and tried a size large, however I have a bit of a belly and found it difficult to layer. I bought the XL, the fit was much better for me, not necessarily a tailored fit but at least I can comfortably layer. The vest is plenty warm and already have the olive color vest on order!
