Frequently Asked Questions
-
The Mackinaw Rancher uses premium 26-ounce, 100% wool from American Woolen Company while keeping the same proven Rancher design. It also uses shearling to line the earbands instead of fleece.
-
The Mackinaw Rancher is one of the warmest caps we make. It combines premium 26-ounce, 100% wool with Thinsulate™ insulation in the crown and shearling-lined earbands for exceptional warmth in the coldest winter conditions. If you spend long days outdoors in extreme cold, this cap was built for it.
-
The crown of the Mackinaw Rancher is lined with soft cotton flannel and features a comfortable polycotton sweatband, so there is no wool against your forehead. The pull-down earbands, however, are lined with shearling, which naturally contains wool. If you have a sensitivity to wool on your skin, keep this in mind when choosing a hat.
-
Yes. The Mackinaw Rancher Cap's extended earbands fully cover your ears when pulled down and provide additional coverage at the back of the neck. If you're spending long days outdoors in cold or windy conditions, it offers significantly more protection than the Original Stormy Kromer Cap.
-
Use a soft tape measure to measure around your head where you like your hat to sit. Divide that measurement by 3.14 (π), then round up to the nearest 1/8. This is your Stormy Kromer hat size. If you don't have a tape measure, you can also use a piece of string and measure it against a ruler. Please remember that these hats generally do not stretch over time. If your measurement falls between sizes, or if you prefer a looser fit, we recommend sizing up.
-
Dry cleaning is the best way to care for your Mackinaw Rancher Cap. For small spills or stains, spot cleaning is often enough. If your cap gets wet from rain or snow, let it air dry naturally away from direct heat or sunlight. Never put your wool cap in the dryer, as the heat can cause it to shrink.

Keeps my head and ears warm, particularly when I'm out walking my dogs early (05:30) in the morning. Fits well both with the flaps up or down. Highly recommend these hats. Have 3 others and they are all just great.

Love this cap! Purchased this cap to keep my head warm this cold winter, and for an upcoming trip to Quebec for the winter carnival. I used the site guidelines for sizing because I heard they can run smaller than what I was used to. This proved true but when I followed the guidelines it worked out. I’m normally a 7 1/4” hat but for SK the 7 1/2” was a perfect fit. The hat is super warm and the fold down wool flaps make it even warmer if you’re out in the wind. I love the look of the cap and I’ve got tons of compliments on it already. Quality materials and construction. My favorite hat for the winter by far!

With the frigid -40 windchills, this hat couldn’t have come at a better time! Snug fit to protect you from the wind. Be sure to measure your hat size.

The picture does not do justice to the actual hat. It is more than I expected. The service from the company is the best I have ever had with an online company. I will gladly recommend the company to everyone.

Love this quality, wool hat! Even though I’m a midwestern, we endure moderately cold weather and this hat definitely keeps the head warm. Also love that it’s made in a neighboring state, and reminds me of the city I love.

Absolutely love this cap - very comfortable, keeps me warm, and I'm a fan of the nostalgic, vintage look. This is a very functional hat, works well for me in temps from the mid 30s F down to below zero (with neck gaiter and face protection, of course). I liked this hat so much, in fact, that I bought a second, to keep nice for church / going to town, while the first serves me well during the week at work. Highly recommend this cap. What most attracted me to it was the 100% wool, with 100% cotton lining - deal maker for me, for sure. After reading many reviews, I decided to order a 7 3/8 even though I usually wear a 7 1/4. Fit is perfect - snug, without being too tight; and I've also found that the hat does stretch ever so slightly during prolonged wear, conforming even more comfortably to my head shape over time. As you can see, I really do love this hat. If you get one, I think you'll be more than satisfied with the comfort, QUALITY, and enduring character of this cap. Highly recommended.
