Frequently Asked Questions
-
The Waxed Cotton Cap is designed for cool, wet weather—not extreme cold. It's uninsulated, making it best suited for fall, spring, and other cool, wet days. In milder climates, it may work well as a winter cap, but in colder regions it won't provide the same warmth as the Original or Rancher.
-
Choose the Waxed Cotton Cap when you expect wet weather and want added water resistance. Its waxed canvas shell sheds rain while developing a distinctive weathered look over time.
-
The Waxed Cotton Cap is water-resistant, not waterproof. Its paraffin-treated waxed cotton shell sheds rain and snow in most conditions, but because the seams aren't sealed, it's not designed for prolonged exposure to heavy rain.

Use a soft tape measure to measure around your head where you like your hat to sit. Divide that measurement by 3.14 (π), then round up to the nearest 1/8. This is your Stormy Kromer hat size. If you don't have a tape measure, you can also use a piece of string and measure it against a ruler. Please remember that these hats generally do not stretch over time. If your measurement falls between sizes, or if you prefer a looser fit, we recommend sizing up.
-
Simply slide your thumb between the earband and the cap, then pull the earband down over your ears. There's no need to untie or unfold anything. When you're ready, just pull it back up into place for the classic Stormy Kromer look.

Spot cleaning is the best way to care for your Waxed Cotton Cap. Cold water is often all you need, but if necessary, use a gentle castile soap. Avoid hot water, laundry detergent, and dish soap, as they can damage the waxed finish. Over time, you may need to rewax your cap to restore its water resistance. We offer wax tins specifically for that purpose.

I ordered the waxed cotton cap to wear when it gets too warm for wool SK cap. When the cap arrived, there was an almost imperceptible sewing issue - I doubt anyone else would ever notice it, but it bugged me every time I saw myself in a reflection. I called SK customer service, they asked if I could send them some pics, and they called me back that same day, apologizing and telling me a replacement was on the way. What more could you expect? Great company. Support them.

I’ve had my waxed cotton cap for almost a year now. I’ve worn it all winter as a replacement for my everyday warm weather hat. It’s perfect for everyday wear, when I don’t want a really warm hat. But it really came in handy yesterday, when SE Minnesota got hammered by rain switching to wet snow throughout the day. It was beading all the moisture off and keeping my head dry. And did the same while running the snowblower this morning. I highly recommend it for a good everyday hat for those times you don’t need all the warmth of a wool hat. Awesome product!

I ordered the normal size that I always wear, however this hat seems to be a size to large. Hoping to return for smaller size

Great hat, rather bullet proof, however also no airflow! Needs to have breather holes for comfort.

I have 5 SK wool caps that are 5star. Just got the w axes cap and hope after breaking it in it will also be a 5 star. Seems true to size, reviews have mentioned that theirs was a little small. But after the breaking in period it was fine. Lite weight compared to the wool caps, this could be good during early hunting season in SC. It is a little stiff, hoping. It does like the wool caps and just forms to my head. Definitely a quality product.

Just arrived a couple of days ago and seems like it is going to be a good cap. Not as comfortable as the wool caps, it that was expected. The camo is very good, will blend in while I am stand hunting in the early season. Seems true to fit, I ordered same size as the last 5 wool caps from Stormy Kromer.
