Frequently Asked Questions

  • The Waxed Cotton Cap is designed for cool, wet weather—not extreme cold. It's uninsulated, making it best suited for fall, spring, and other cool, wet days. In milder climates, it may work well as a winter cap, but in colder regions it won't provide the same warmth as the Original or Rancher.

  • Choose the Waxed Cotton Cap when you expect wet weather and want added water resistance. Its waxed canvas shell sheds rain while developing a distinctive weathered look over time.

  • The Waxed Cotton Cap is water-resistant, not waterproof. Its paraffin-treated waxed cotton shell sheds rain and snow in most conditions, but because the seams aren't sealed, it's not designed for prolonged exposure to heavy rain.

  • Use a soft tape measure to measure around your head where you like your hat to sit. Divide that measurement by 3.14 (π), then round up to the nearest 1/8. This is your Stormy Kromer hat size. If you don't have a tape measure, you can also use a piece of string and measure it against a ruler. Please remember that these hats generally do not stretch over time. If your measurement falls between sizes, or if you prefer a looser fit, we recommend sizing up.

  • Simply slide your thumb between the earband and the cap, then pull the earband down over your ears. There's no need to untie or unfold anything. When you're ready, just pull it back up into place for the classic Stormy Kromer look.

  • Spot cleaning is the best way to care for your Waxed Cotton Cap. Cold water is often all you need, but if necessary, use a gentle castile soap. Avoid hot water, laundry detergent, and dish soap, as they can damage the waxed finish. Over time, you may need to rewax your cap to restore its water resistance. We offer wax tins specifically for that purpose.

My friends here in the pacific northwest have not seen too many stormy kromers. Today while salmon fishing on the Columbia river, I got two "hey, what kind of hat is that?" It's a stormy kromer, says I, and it's made in America! Expect a few more orders from Vancouver Washington! -Smitty

I actually won it last summer for entering the fishing contest. I have a "few" other Kromers, but this has become my favorite. It took a few trips to break it in, but now it fits like a glove. I wear it all the time, unless the temp drops too low and I have to switch to wool. -Joe

This is my first SK item ever bought. I know, crazy huh. Went to visit my daughter at college and saw this hat in the window. All of those were too big. Got home and immediately got on line and ordered one. Began looking at the other hats and had to order the brimless. Now my head fights over which hat will be worn that day. Both of these hats are sick! That means good my daughter says. Thanks SK and God bless the USA! -Peanut

For years I've used a traditional blaze orange wool Kromer cap for hunting. I finally got myself an "everyday" Kromer in the Dark Green Waxed Cotton. I love it! As soon as that hat goes on I'm north of HWY 2 draggin a buck! -The Fireman

I lost my tan waxed cotton in a South Dakota cafe on a pheasant hunting trip. When I got home to the Green Bay, Wi. area got on line and ordered another. I have since also purchased a waxed cotton camo for waterfowling. Love the Kromers, very popular at our local gun club. -Mr. 18

I have purchased six stormys in the last year and the waxed cotton hat is my favorite. Its fit is second to none and it has that rugged rustic look that I like. Love my kromers! Keep up the good work!Jeff from South Dakota -jeff

Have had my field tan waxed cap for a week now and love it. As stated by a previous reviewer, it is ever so slightly bigger than my same sized wool standard Kromer. But I just cinched up the tie in front a little bit and it now fits like a glove. I love the character of the waxed cotton. Looks broken in right away and will only get better with age. This'll be my Sept-Nov and April-June cap. Ok, since I just got it, it'll also see some time here in Dec. This might be my favorite of all my Kromers. I myself have 5 now. This one, camo wool std, red plaid std, grey std and rancher just received. My bride can't figure out why I need so many. -BR SD

Fits a little bigger than my wool SK. But I love it. Got it cause my wool one was a little much on the cool days. Really enjoy wearing both of them. Thanks for a great product. -Tommy
