Frequently Asked Questions
-
The Waxed Cotton Cap is designed for cool, wet weather—not extreme cold. It's uninsulated, making it best suited for fall, spring, and other cool, wet days. In milder climates, it may work well as a winter cap, but in colder regions it won't provide the same warmth as the Original or Rancher.
-
Choose the Waxed Cotton Cap when you expect wet weather and want added water resistance. Its waxed canvas shell sheds rain while developing a distinctive weathered look over time.
-
The Waxed Cotton Cap is water-resistant, not waterproof. Its paraffin-treated waxed cotton shell sheds rain and snow in most conditions, but because the seams aren't sealed, it's not designed for prolonged exposure to heavy rain.

Use a soft tape measure to measure around your head where you like your hat to sit. Divide that measurement by 3.14 (π), then round up to the nearest 1/8. This is your Stormy Kromer hat size. If you don't have a tape measure, you can also use a piece of string and measure it against a ruler. Please remember that these hats generally do not stretch over time. If your measurement falls between sizes, or if you prefer a looser fit, we recommend sizing up.
-
Simply slide your thumb between the earband and the cap, then pull the earband down over your ears. There's no need to untie or unfold anything. When you're ready, just pull it back up into place for the classic Stormy Kromer look.
-
Spot cleaning is the best way to care for your Waxed Cotton Cap. Cold water is often all you need, but if necessary, use a gentle castile soap. Avoid hot water, laundry detergent, and dish soap, as they can damage the waxed finish. Over time, you may need to rewax your cap to restore its water resistance. We offer wax tins specifically for that purpose.

Always wanted a Stormy Kromer. Unfortunately this hat does not run small as they advertize size wise. Had to return for a smaller size and waiting for it to arrive. Great quality and style!

Wonderful hat - thanks for making it in my size (8) ! I own several Kromers - would be nice if this one came with a small supply of the "wax" treatment for it.. Wish the "tweed trimmed" version of this came in size 8. Thanks for a great product -

Received this a gift from my daughter who thought her dad would appreciate it. Well, the short bill does not keep the sun out of my eyes and the ear flaps are pretty useless with a cold Minnesota winter wind blowing. A good stocking cap will fully cover the ears and the back of my neck. Good construction and good materials. Maybe I should view this as a spring or fall cap. Looks to be too hot for the summer. Hi Andrew - we do recommend the Waxed Cotton as a spring or fall cap. For Minnesota winters you would need our Original Wool Cap at a minimum, and probably something heavier like our Rancher or Trapper. Please give us a call if we can be of assistance! 888-455-2253
