Frequently Asked Questions

The Waxed Cotton Cap is designed for cool, wet weather—not extreme cold. It's uninsulated, making it best suited for fall, spring, and other cool, wet days. In milder climates, it may work well as a winter cap, but in colder regions it won't provide the same warmth as the Original or Rancher.
-
Choose the Waxed Cotton Cap when you expect wet weather and want added water resistance. Its waxed canvas shell sheds rain while developing a distinctive weathered look over time.
-
The Waxed Cotton Cap is water-resistant, not waterproof. Its paraffin-treated waxed cotton shell sheds rain and snow in most conditions, but because the seams aren't sealed, it's not designed for prolonged exposure to heavy rain.

Use a soft tape measure to measure around your head where you like your hat to sit. Divide that measurement by 3.14 (π), then round up to the nearest 1/8. This is your Stormy Kromer hat size. If you don't have a tape measure, you can also use a piece of string and measure it against a ruler. Please remember that these hats generally do not stretch over time. If your measurement falls between sizes, or if you prefer a looser fit, we recommend sizing up.
-
Simply slide your thumb between the earband and the cap, then pull the earband down over your ears. There's no need to untie or unfold anything. When you're ready, just pull it back up into place for the classic Stormy Kromer look.

Spot cleaning is the best way to care for your Waxed Cotton Cap. Cold water is often all you need, but if necessary, use a gentle castile soap. Avoid hot water, laundry detergent, and dish soap, as they can damage the waxed finish. Over time, you may need to rewax your cap to restore its water resistance. We offer wax tins specifically for that purpose.

Great hat but I wish there was a little less material on top. I have a smaller head so it looks a little high on top.

This is my third Stormy, so I was no stranger to the craftsmanship, fit and finish of their caps. Even still I was surprised by how perfectly comfortable it was the day I got it. I've never owned a hat that required so little break-in and was immediately my go-to. This is a fitted hat with no ventilation, so it runs on the warm side and probably won't be my first choice in the summer but it is not uncomfortably warm, either. This will be my first choice cover in spring, autumn, and in rain.

Great American made product. Nice fit and quality construction you would expect form an American company. I will buy with blaze orange for hunting.

I have two of these now. One in orange and one in green. They are warm and will keep the rain or snow from soaking in and making your head cold. be forewarned that this is waxed cotton and it does not breathe. If you are participating in anything that may be strenuous and you sweat, your head will look like you just got out of a pool. This is NOT a bad thing since the hat is doing what it is supposed to. As with all SK products it is a high quality product that will last a lifetime.
