Frequently Asked Questions

The Waxed Cotton Cap is designed for cool, wet weather—not extreme cold. It's uninsulated, making it best suited for fall, spring, and other cool, wet days. In milder climates, it may work well as a winter cap, but in colder regions it won't provide the same warmth as the Original or Rancher.
-
Choose the Waxed Cotton Cap when you expect wet weather and want added water resistance. Its waxed canvas shell sheds rain while developing a distinctive weathered look over time.
-
The Waxed Cotton Cap is water-resistant, not waterproof. Its paraffin-treated waxed cotton shell sheds rain and snow in most conditions, but because the seams aren't sealed, it's not designed for prolonged exposure to heavy rain.

Use a soft tape measure to measure around your head where you like your hat to sit. Divide that measurement by 3.14 (π), then round up to the nearest 1/8. This is your Stormy Kromer hat size. If you don't have a tape measure, you can also use a piece of string and measure it against a ruler. Please remember that these hats generally do not stretch over time. If your measurement falls between sizes, or if you prefer a looser fit, we recommend sizing up.
-
Simply slide your thumb between the earband and the cap, then pull the earband down over your ears. There's no need to untie or unfold anything. When you're ready, just pull it back up into place for the classic Stormy Kromer look.

Spot cleaning is the best way to care for your Waxed Cotton Cap. Cold water is often all you need, but if necessary, use a gentle castile soap. Avoid hot water, laundry detergent, and dish soap, as they can damage the waxed finish. Over time, you may need to rewax your cap to restore its water resistance. We offer wax tins specifically for that purpose.

I am the proud owner of two hats. Rancher and waxed insulated. Both are fantastic. Customer service was extremely helpful and friendly. Looking to buy a hat for a friend and also add to my collection. Thanks SK!

This was my first purchase of a stormy kromer I purchased it in the UP while visiting my son in college. I liked the hat because of it's reputation and this one was waxed cotton, why I gave it 2 stars I am bald and that the hat can not breath so I sweat in the hat and get cold it doesn't matter about the temperature, maybe it works for people that have hair but I can not see how. I don't like giving negative reviews. But I'm hesitant to purchase a hat take is wool? Will the hat breath so I don't sweat in it I can only wear the hat for a short while before I have to take it off. I keep wearing it to see if it brakes in and will not make my head sweat I even wear it in the rain to see if this will work to brake in so far no luck. I have had the hat for 6 months. ~~ Sorry to hear that your waxed cap isn't working for you. Part of the reason the cap works so well is the wax on the fabric that repells water - it doesn't let water soak in, so it might not disperse sweat from your head either. Our wool caps do breath much more than the waxed, so it might be a good option for you to try. SK ~~

Buddy turned me onto Kromer this year. I've never been more impressed with a cap. Wore it duck hunting and stayed dry and warm. Happy to support an American made company!
