Frequently Asked Questions
-
The Waxed Cotton Cap is designed for cool, wet weather—not extreme cold. It's uninsulated, making it best suited for fall, spring, and other cool, wet days. In milder climates, it may work well as a winter cap, but in colder regions it won't provide the same warmth as the Original or Rancher.
-
Choose the Waxed Cotton Cap when you expect wet weather and want added water resistance. Its waxed canvas shell sheds rain while developing a distinctive weathered look over time.
-
The Waxed Cotton Cap is water-resistant, not waterproof. Its paraffin-treated waxed cotton shell sheds rain and snow in most conditions, but because the seams aren't sealed, it's not designed for prolonged exposure to heavy rain.

Use a soft tape measure to measure around your head where you like your hat to sit. Divide that measurement by 3.14 (π), then round up to the nearest 1/8. This is your Stormy Kromer hat size. If you don't have a tape measure, you can also use a piece of string and measure it against a ruler. Please remember that these hats generally do not stretch over time. If your measurement falls between sizes, or if you prefer a looser fit, we recommend sizing up.
-
Simply slide your thumb between the earband and the cap, then pull the earband down over your ears. There's no need to untie or unfold anything. When you're ready, just pull it back up into place for the classic Stormy Kromer look.
-
Spot cleaning is the best way to care for your Waxed Cotton Cap. Cold water is often all you need, but if necessary, use a gentle castile soap. Avoid hot water, laundry detergent, and dish soap, as they can damage the waxed finish. Over time, you may need to rewax your cap to restore its water resistance. We offer wax tins specifically for that purpose.

Sure love my Stormy Kromer hat! I can't say enough about the old-time, made in the USA craftsmanship and customer service! True heirloom quality! Only think I would advise, is these hats run very, very small. After some back-and-forth shipping trips, ended up with a 7 7/8 hat. Typically, I've worn a 7 3/8 in other models. Well worth it, I see this cap adventuring with me for a couple of decades. ~~ We'll make sure our design and inspection departments are aware of this. SK ~~

My third SK hat. Absolutely perfect. If you live in the Midwest and don’t own a SK hat you are wrong. As a vet I will proudly support American made every chance I get. You can’t match this type of quality.

I absolutely love these waxed hats! I have two, one for work at my mill and the other for regular use. These things are great and if you don’t own one, go buy one! Made in USA is a killer selling point for me!
