Frequently Asked Questions
-
The Waxed Cotton Cap is designed for cool, wet weather—not extreme cold. It's uninsulated, making it best suited for fall, spring, and other cool, wet days. In milder climates, it may work well as a winter cap, but in colder regions it won't provide the same warmth as the Original or Rancher.
-
Choose the Waxed Cotton Cap when you expect wet weather and want added water resistance. Its waxed canvas shell sheds rain while developing a distinctive weathered look over time.
-
The Waxed Cotton Cap is water-resistant, not waterproof. Its paraffin-treated waxed cotton shell sheds rain and snow in most conditions, but because the seams aren't sealed, it's not designed for prolonged exposure to heavy rain.

Use a soft tape measure to measure around your head where you like your hat to sit. Divide that measurement by 3.14 (π), then round up to the nearest 1/8. This is your Stormy Kromer hat size. If you don't have a tape measure, you can also use a piece of string and measure it against a ruler. Please remember that these hats generally do not stretch over time. If your measurement falls between sizes, or if you prefer a looser fit, we recommend sizing up.
-
Simply slide your thumb between the earband and the cap, then pull the earband down over your ears. There's no need to untie or unfold anything. When you're ready, just pull it back up into place for the classic Stormy Kromer look.
-
Spot cleaning is the best way to care for your Waxed Cotton Cap. Cold water is often all you need, but if necessary, use a gentle castile soap. Avoid hot water, laundry detergent, and dish soap, as they can damage the waxed finish. Over time, you may need to rewax your cap to restore its water resistance. We offer wax tins specifically for that purpose.

My favorite cap is always the last Stormy Kromer I bought. Fit, finish is outstanding and it's made in the USA.

Great for spring, fall, and winter. I’ll switch to the trail cap for summer.

The ear and brim seems to be cut wrong or the wrong size for this hat. I have 5 SK hats and the band around all of them lays flat against the main part of hat, this one sticks out away from hat at the top edge. For a most likely rain hat it makes a couple of perfect troughs for rain water to build up between main body and ear band. I tried to pull it as tight as I could and that didn’t work. I will send it back.

This is my fourth SK and I’m hooked on them! Best hats I’ve worn for where live here in the good old U.P.! Added bonus is it’s like I’m buying something made in my backyard.

I love my mak sk. I got this model because i wanted to be able to wear my stormy when it gets warmer. This hat is way smaller in the same size. The liner is extremely rough and uncomfortable on my forehead. Im going to try to cut it out and see if the hat survives. ---Hi Michael, I am sorry your hat isn't fitting as expected. We are happy to process an exchange for you so you can obtain the correct size. I will send over an email on how to do so shortly. SK---
