Frequently Asked Questions

The Mackinaw Coat has a generous fit designed for layering. Order your usual size if you plan to wear it over sweaters, flannels, or other cold-weather layers. If you prefer a trimmer, more fashion-forward fit, consider sizing down. If you are 6' or taller, you might consider our tall sizes.
-
The Mackinaw Coat is made from heavy, densely woven 26-ounce wool that naturally blocks wind, insulates, and breathes. Because it isn't insulated, warmth will vary depending on your activity level and what you wear underneath. For many people, it's one of their warmest coats. If you're looking for maximum warmth, consider our Double Mackinaw Coat, which adds a second layer of 26-ounce wool across the chest.
-
No. The Mackinaw Coat is intentionally unlined, following the design of traditional wool coats. Instead, it relies on heavy 26-ounce, 100% wool to provide warmth, breathability, and long-lasting durability.
-
Both coats are made from the same premium 26-ounce, 100% wool from American Woolen Company. The Double Mackinaw Coat features a second layer of wool across the chest for added warmth in extreme cold. If you prefer a lighter, less bulky coat with room for layering, the Mackinaw Coat is an excellent choice.
-
Yes, especially in snow. Wool can absorb up to 35% of its weight in moisture while still providing warmth, making the Mackinaw Coat an excellent choice for heavy, wet snow and cold outdoor activities like hunting, ice fishing, or snow blowing. It isn't waterproof, however, so it's not intended for prolonged exposure to heavy rain.
-
Dry cleaning is the best way to care for your Mackinaw Coat. Spot cleaning can work for small stains as needed. If the coat becomes wet, allow it to air dry away from direct heat or sunlight. Never machine dry your wool coat.

Wow. I own several Filson mackinaws and this one is truly special. The weave is a bit tighter than the Filson's mackinaw but the cut, fit, and design (I believe) is superior. The button flap and neck are reinforced w/ a more sturdy material and adjustable wrist cuffs is a nice feature. Wearing the coat, it feels warm and snug but not restrictive in anyway. Eager to take it out in the cold and see how it handles the chilly weather. Thanks Stormy Kromer for a great coat!

A coat of a lifetime. Incredibly well made and comfortable. Thanks for the 3XT. Normally wear a 4XT but this does the trick. The grand kids will wear this coat someday.

I wanted a Mackinaw Coat for a while now. I've been a fan of S.K. hats and know their quality is top shelf. When the coat went on sale I couldn't resist any longer. I am 6'4" and about 255#, so ordered the XXL tall. It fits perfectly and has room to wear a heavy sweater or vest underneath. I couldn't be more pleased. As a former Yooper ,who hopes to return someday, I am very supportive of products made in God's Country. I'll be wearing my Mackinaw with pride knowing that it's not only made in the U.S.A., but from an area in Michigan that I love. Get yourself one. You won't be disappointed.

Got mine in Charcoal about 6 or 7 Years ago when we were still able to get a size 46, wish they would go back to that sizing. Wear it from Fall to Spring, no matter what you wear under the coat, it hang's perfectly. In the extreme cold, a henley, flannel shirt and a wool vest (have 7 stormy's) and you are ready for whatever Mother Nature throws at you. Besides being very functional, you will look good in whatever you are doing. Just got one for my son for Christmas and the quality and look is identical. Hung them side by side and the only difference is that his is a little bigger. You will never go wrong with a Stomy.

It runs BIG compared to most store bought clothing items. I purchased the 2XLT and had to return it for a XLT. I always purchase 2XLT when available (5'10" 255). I was swimming it this and had to exchange. Family said I looked silly. If you are not sure what size to get, probably error on the smaller choice. Seems like a really well made coat and I am hoping to get the years out of it other reviewers suggest. I purchased the Charcoal color. It is almost BLACK and probably should be called called Dark Gray. I purchased a Charcoal hat and the color is Light Gray. I called to ask if they matched prior to the order so I knew in advance. Would have preferred a matching hat. The dark gray is very nice looking and is Business Appropriate for an Office Job. Wife was concerned I would look like a hunter walking into a boardroom meeting. I purchased this Coat this Spring so it would be unfair to make a statement on the warmth. I will find out next year. ~~I'm so sorry to hear we didn't get the matching hat for you! Please reach out to [email protected] regarding this and we'll be happy to get this taken care of for you SK~~

I bought this for my husband for Christmas and it is a fine piece of craftsmanship! It is an old school coat, which in my , and my husband's, book is a wonderful thing. It is densely woven, roomy, warm, and gorgeous. Outdoors ladies, if you want your man to look ruggedly handsome, this is the coat to buy him! It will last a lifetime and can be passed on to your progeny, just as I have my dad's old hunting coat. Stormy Kroner clothing is the opposite of " fast fashion" and that's why I've purchased multiple items for him and for me over the years. Keep up the good USA work, Stormy, and I love that you work with the St. Luke's N. E.W. Life Center in Flint. Dang, I'm almost in tears thinking about how this company is doing wonderful things for our beautiful state of Michigan.
