Frequently Asked Questions

  • The Mackinaw Coat has a generous fit designed for layering. Order your usual size if you plan to wear it over sweaters, flannels, or other cold-weather layers. If you prefer a trimmer, more fashion-forward fit, consider sizing down. If you are 6' or taller, you might consider our tall sizes.

  • The Mackinaw Coat is made from heavy, densely woven 26-ounce wool that naturally blocks wind, insulates, and breathes. Because it isn't insulated, warmth will vary depending on your activity level and what you wear underneath. For many people, it's one of their warmest coats. If you're looking for maximum warmth, consider our Double Mackinaw Coat, which adds a second layer of 26-ounce wool across the chest.

  • No. The Mackinaw Coat is intentionally unlined, following the design of traditional wool coats. Instead, it relies on heavy 26-ounce, 100% wool to provide warmth, breathability, and long-lasting durability.

  • Both coats are made from the same premium 26-ounce, 100% wool from American Woolen Company. The Double Mackinaw Coat features a second layer of wool across the chest for added warmth in extreme cold. If you prefer a lighter, less bulky coat with room for layering, the Mackinaw Coat is an excellent choice.

  • Yes, especially in snow. Wool can absorb up to 35% of its weight in moisture while still providing warmth, making the Mackinaw Coat an excellent choice for heavy, wet snow and cold outdoor activities like hunting, ice fishing, or snow blowing. It isn't waterproof, however, so it's not intended for prolonged exposure to heavy rain.

  • Dry cleaning is the best way to care for your Mackinaw Coat. Spot cleaning can work for small stains as needed. If the coat becomes wet, allow it to air dry away from direct heat or sunlight. Never machine dry your wool coat.

Great coat, quality product and good fit. The buttons on mine all had to be redone as they were not quite sewn properly and wouldnt have lasted long.

Awesome coat! Wish I would have bought it sooner. Fits like a glove and looks and feels fantastic . Should have bought the matching hat too.

Great product. Well made high quality product. Very versatile coat. I can wear it anywhere. I had to order a size smaller because of the generous cut. I would assume it’s for layering.

Wish you would make the wool coat with a lining like years ago. Son’s favorite coat for years! Has a lining! ~Sorry you're unhappy that the coat doesn't have a lining. I will send your suggestion to our design team for consideration. SK~

Well done classic. Would like to see one with a zipper and an insulating lining so it would truly be suitable for cold weather. Maybe a detachable hood. I know this would increase the cost but it would be a worthwhile project and would truly outclass anything out there. I had an old insulated wool coat from a grand parent that dated into the 1950’s so they used to be made years ago. ~ I will send your suggestions to our design department. SK ~
