Frequently Asked Questions

The Mackinaw Coat has a generous fit designed for layering. Order your usual size if you plan to wear it over sweaters, flannels, or other cold-weather layers. If you prefer a trimmer, more fashion-forward fit, consider sizing down. If you are 6' or taller, you might consider our tall sizes.
-
The Mackinaw Coat is made from heavy, densely woven 26-ounce wool that naturally blocks wind, insulates, and breathes. Because it isn't insulated, warmth will vary depending on your activity level and what you wear underneath. For many people, it's one of their warmest coats. If you're looking for maximum warmth, consider our Double Mackinaw Coat, which adds a second layer of 26-ounce wool across the chest.
-
No. The Mackinaw Coat is intentionally unlined, following the design of traditional wool coats. Instead, it relies on heavy 26-ounce, 100% wool to provide warmth, breathability, and long-lasting durability.
-
Both coats are made from the same premium 26-ounce, 100% wool from American Woolen Company. The Double Mackinaw Coat features a second layer of wool across the chest for added warmth in extreme cold. If you prefer a lighter, less bulky coat with room for layering, the Mackinaw Coat is an excellent choice.
-
Yes, especially in snow. Wool can absorb up to 35% of its weight in moisture while still providing warmth, making the Mackinaw Coat an excellent choice for heavy, wet snow and cold outdoor activities like hunting, ice fishing, or snow blowing. It isn't waterproof, however, so it's not intended for prolonged exposure to heavy rain.
-
Dry cleaning is the best way to care for your Mackinaw Coat. Spot cleaning can work for small stains as needed. If the coat becomes wet, allow it to air dry away from direct heat or sunlight. Never machine dry your wool coat.

I was looking for a great wool coat and this one certainly delivers. The quality is excellent! It does seem to run large but it fits perfectly when paired with a wool sweater. I will be enjoying this coat for a long time.

I absolutely LOVE my Mackinaw Coat! It looks so nice and I have gotten so many compliments on it that I am proud to wear it anywhere. It took me a little while to finally decide if I wanted to buy one or not, but it was 100% worth it. A great piece of legendary clothing that is made in the USA.

I live in the Tongass, a northern temperate rain forest, at 57 degrees North Latitude. This coat is nearly perfect from October through April over layers and may even find use during the Summer months. The quality of materials and workmanship are superb. On me, the coat provides plenty of room for multiple layers. It is a dense enough weave that it keeps out wind and rain. The generous collar turned up is almost as good as a hood for protection.

Solid coat. I cruise and mark timber in northern Idaho, and this coat is built with thick material and and warm in freezing temps and snow. Best mountain coat I have worn.

This is one of the best made coats I’ve ever purchased. The buttons and seams are strong. While winter was mostly over by the time I ordered it, I wore it enough to know that it’s warm, it’s comfortable, and it should last forever. I’m looking forward to having it for many years to come!
