Frequently Asked Questions
-
Yes. The Original Benchwarmer Cap – Michigan® is an officially licensed product featuring authentic University of Michigan™ colors and logos.
-
Use a soft tape measure to measure around your head where you like your hat to sit. Divide that measurement by 3.14 (π), then round up to the nearest 1/8. This is your Stormy Kromer hat size. If you don't have a tape measure, you can also use a piece of string and measure it against a ruler. Please remember that these hats generally do not stretch over time. If your measurement falls between sizes, or if you prefer a looser fit, we recommend sizing up.
-
The Original Benchwarmer Cap is designed for cold-weather comfort, but how warm it feels depends on the person and the conditions. Wool provides natural warmth while remaining breathable, making it a great choice for cool to cold weather. If you regularly spend extended time outdoors in extreme cold, consider one of our insulated styles or hats with longer earbands for additional warmth.
-
Simply slide your thumb between the earband and the cap, then pull the earband down over your ears. There's no need to untie or unfold anything. When you're ready, just pull it back up into place for the classic Stormy Kromer look.
-
For most people, the Original Benchwarmer Cap's earband covers about one-half to two-thirds of the ear. Because everyone's head shape and ear placement are different, coverage will vary. If you're looking for more coverage or added warmth in extreme cold, Stormy Kromer also offers styles with longer earbands and additional insulation.
-
Dry cleaning is the best way to care for your Original Benchwarmer Cap. For small spills or stains, spot cleaning is often enough. If your cap gets wet from rain or snow, let it air dry naturally away from direct heat or sunlight. Never put your wool cap in the dryer, as the heat can cause it to shrink.

I love the hat. I just wish there wasn’t a blue stitch all the way across the yellow Block M.

The fit is good. The ear coverage makes a world of difference on these 20 degree days. The material is soft and warm.

Wearing my U of M Stormy cap right now at home in OK. Alumnus from 1975, I love my Michigan winter wool cap, and especially that Kromer is from Ironwood, in the UP. Kind of some mystical synergy. This is my second SK cap—I also have the waxed cotton rain cap, bought from their local distributor in OKC. LOVE Stormy—now I just have to find a way to squirrel enough money away to get their archival cape coat!
